BTY YoungN, a New Orleans-born rapper from Carrollton whose given name was Desmone Jerome, was gunned down Saturday night (April 29) on Airline Highway in Hollygrove, according to a relative and New Orleans police.
Glenn Bell, who identified himself as Jerome’s cousin, confirmed that it was BTY YoungN who was killed. He described the 27-year-old rapper as “a very positive individual” who excelled academically at Riverdale High School and began crafting hip-hop rhymes at age 11.
“He was a very uplifting individual,” Bell said. “A very positive individual. Very impactful.”
Struggling to come to grips with the tragedy, Bell said BTY YoungN’s rap career had not ended with his death. “Rap is his career, not was,” Bell said. “He’s going to live on.”
Bell was surrounded by around 100 bystanders scattered in groups outside the gas station and along Airline Highway in the 9200 block. Police set up a black body screen beside a gas pump at a Shell station, and had blocked Airline from Mistletoe to Cherry streets. Over a dozen police vehicles and dozens more officers swarmed the gas station.
